China, pork & PRRS:2007 in figures
China is considered as a market full of
opportunities, but 2007 turned out not to be
the best year when it comes down to pig
production. The United Nations’ Food &
Agriculture Organization collected the latest
data about a black year for pork in China.
The role of nucleotides in piglet nutrition
Trials with nucleotides in piglet feed over the
last couple of years revealed a wide range of
positive effects on the animals’ health and
results during weaning. Causes and effects are
presented here.
Fighting the inodorous, invisible killer
Pigs are highly sensitive to mycotoxins and
economic losses are consequently very
important. Even if diagnosis is difficult,
preventive solutions do exist to avoid
mycotoxicosis. Using modified clay is one of
these solutions.
Preparing for an era of new emission standards
As of October 2007, the Integrated Pollution
Prevention and Control (IPPC) measures had to
be fully implemented in the European member
states. These measures certainly had farstretching
consequences for pig producers all
throughout Europe. How to meet the new
emission standards?
The discussion goes on:organic pork production and global warming
Is conventional pork production bad for global warming? British scientists tried
to figure out the contribution of both organic and non-organic pork production
to global warming. Contrary to poultry and egg production, it was shown that
organic pork production does have its benefits against global warming.
PCVD - From pathogenesis to Part 4. Cost and benefit of PCV2 First results of research
into vaccination against
Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease (PCVD)
indicate that this devastating disease can be
controlled by administering circovirus (or PCV2)
vaccines. Trials in the UK and Germany emphasise
losses for producers when nothing is done.
Pig farmers’ cooperatives in Cameroon:

a local scale with a lot of backyard farming.
However, cooperative initiatives like Nowepifac
in the North West Province, have started to give
local farmers better opportunities.
